Five stars because I got to relive the plot of Revenge of the Sith over again. I haven’t screamed at a book so much in a long time. I felt ANXIETY. This book should still be in canon. Except for what Cody did :( but Anakin’s fall was much more detailed and gave me more context to actually give a single fuck about Darth Vader. So great. I want to own it and read it 5 more times.

This book is such a great complement to the movie. Looking inside Anakin and Obi Wan’s minds is heartbreaking and makes all the events hit harder. You really get to see all sides. Also, the way Palpatine is described when he is Sidious is actually so scary. Even the moments with Mace Windu and Yoda are totally anguishing. Mace in particular when he goes to face Palpatine breaks me in a way the movie didn’t. I read this in prep to go to the 20th anniversary screening of Revenge of the Sith and I have no regrets. I do have a knock to this book though and it’s a pretty big one. Padme feels very one dimensional in this. She is always pretty solely focused on her love for Anakin in her pov moments and I feel like the moments we get with her being the badass she is are all from others’ thoughts of her. Anakin thinks of her very much as his perfect doll, which I actually did like because him not viewing her as having agency on her own is part of his (many) problems, but I feel like she seems to play into this in this book a lot as opposed to her portrayal in things like the clone wars and her own novels. But other than that, this book is pretty *chef’s kiss*.
