As with her first novel, One Summer in Savannah, this is a great book that I can’t stop thinking about. All of the main characters in this book have pretty major flaws, but I loved how nuanced they were and felt like all of them were real people. I knew where they were coming from and understood where they were going after the novel ends. I learned a lot from this book and thought the payoff at the end was well done. I think I prefer One Summer in Savannah to this one as the story line was a little less scattered than this one, but I’ll definitely be watching for Terah Shelton Harris’s next books!

"Don't let the white man take the house."
This book took me a while to get into. It started very slowly and I had to get used to the long chapters and the POV changes within the chapters. Once the underhanded use of loopholes from a real-estate company came into play in trying to take their 200 acres of generational land came into play, the story got interesting. The Solomon siblings had to come together to bury their larger-than-life father King. He gave his blood, sweat, and tears to this land, and with his dying breath, he reminded his kids of that. The problem? The Solomon siblings had so many secrets weighing them down, that they interfered with all their decisions on how to honor King's dying wish and save the land. They had to come to terms with who they were and what they'd done as individuals before they could come together as siblings and fight for the Kingdom. I found this book to be rich in emotion. As I watched each Solomon child battle their demons, I got angry right along with them for the familial betrayal and happy for their personal growth. I'm happy that the author didn't tie everything up in a neat little bow. It made the rawness of the siblings' journey feel authentically real.
