Very good, very eye opening in yet another circumstance that people of color are taken advantage of and no one knows it happening.
I really liked this book. I was waiting for this book after I finished one summer in Savannah and went to learn more about the author and saw this was on the horizon. Its release has been bookmarked in my calendar since.
At about 60 percent in you get to the climax . The part of the book makes you say “just one more page” because you want to see what each sibling will do.
I don’t know if I’m using the correct word or not, but the tone or writing style of this book is different than her first but at the same time the heart of the book is the same. It still hits real world problems and pulls on the deep internal struggles a lot of people deal with only now it’s reflected back at you on the page. She seems to do this VERY well because this is EXACTLY why I liked the first book. While I don’t believe in comparing one to the other because they are different, I am going to be a hypocrite and do exactly that. I LOVED the first one but I also loved the WAY these characters were developed more. They felt more real, more raw in the way that they moved through the world and the choices they made. How cece , almost to the VERY end still wasn’t getting it and was STILL being selfish until she finally let go. That felt very real to me. How Tokey wanted so bad to connect with her family, especially cece and yet at every opportunity she was snapping at her and throwing out nothing but hostility. Not saying it was or wasn’t deserved but saying how this went completely counter to what she insisted she wanted and part of what drove her addiction. How junior blamed every one is life for making him bend and hide himself until he realized ITS STILL A CHOICE! We get to CHOOSE how we show up in the world. We can’t blame others for that. However, it is still a VERY REAL problem of homophobia and especially being in a small town and that cannot be brushed aside and I want to be clear on that. My point is, when he told his family, he didn’t get the shock and awe he expected which means at the very least, with them he could have been free long before then and taken that burden off. Who knows what would have happened. But I also know it’s always easier said that done/lived. Thats the entire point of the book right? Even Mance, he used his desire to provide and protect as an excuse but it was really a blinder to what he really had. It stopped him, or rather he used it to give him the excuse to not hear the words of those who loved him . They told him what they needed and he basically said no, that can’t possibly be enough. Let ME tell you what you really need. As I stated, I think it would be nearly impossible for someone to not identify with at least a BIT of each of these characters and that’s what makes a GREAT book.
The book started off a little slow but I feel it was 100 percent worth it. There are soooo many themes and discussions you can pull from this book. so many reflections one should be able to see in at least ONE of the characters. This book would be EXCELLENT for any book club.

This was a moving story of a family told from four points of view. They are really isolated from each other and all keeping their secrets close to the chest. The death of their father and the threat of losing their ancestral home brings the siblings together as they learn to trust each other and how toxic secrets can be. There was so much to this book. The relationships between the siblings and the people outside their family was so rich and often heart breaking. I thought the writing in this book was so beautiful and I really felt for this family as they fought for what was theirs. This was a really excellent book. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Let it be. Three simple words that tied together the meaning of this story for me. Let it be to accept yourself, “failures” and all. Let it be, love who you love and be true to yourself. Let it be.
While I can appreciate family drama and the dynamics of siblings, this tale spoke about so much more in the history of Black Americans that I cannot begin to understand. I greatly admire the strength it took to look back on and delve into the lives of those who suffered at the hands of the white men and women and write such a great story.
