The story took a little while to get into, I am so glad I decided to push through because the more I got into it, the more I slowly liked it. Terah Shelton Harris does an excellent job taking you back and forth between the history of this family and where they each are in the present.

Everybody has a secret, but it isn’t necessarily what you expect. The core of this book is the dynamics of family, you learn how much a secret can trap a person. You’re thrown into the dynamics of the secrets we hide, what they do to a person, and how they affect all of the relationships around you.

In the end, the story for me had a core message to own who you are, to continue to move forward, and to understand that not everything is as it always seems. I liked this book very much once I got into it so if you pick this book and stick with it, I think you will find it is very worth it.

I'd never heard of heir property and the associated legal challenges before this book so I enjoyed learning about that. The characters were tough to root for, especially as they continued to make questionable decisions throughout the book. Ellis deserves better.

Really wanted to like this as it was advertised as “devastating”. In the end though I didn’t feel for a single character. Felt very flat.

This story had great potential, but with four characters, you never got to know any one them well enough other than their surface issues. Also, there wasn’t enough interaction between the family members to make it a cohesive story.

One Summer in Savannah, the author’s debut, was one of my favourite books from 2023 so I was looking forward to reading her sophomore novel. Even though I had the ebook, I listened to the audio which was brilliantly narrated.

It was a very different novel from Shelton Harris’ debut, but I can say that the writing was excellent and the author’s talent shone through the pages from start to finish.

The premise of the story about land ownership in the south, the passing of it over generations, and those who try to literally steal the land (through incredulous laws which have the most head shaking loopholes) was interesting. The characters of the family were flawed and each had their own strong personality and sordid past. There are past and present timelines, and though I found both to be relevant, there were times were the writing carried my continued interest as opposed to the plot which seemed to slog at times.

I was definitely invested as to how the story would end and had to know what happened to each of the characters. I can verify that Terah Shelton Harris came through and wrote a satisfying ending.

3.75/5 - I had to think about this for a few days. All in all, it was a good book and held my attention. It showed how everyone is dealing with something and it is definitely hard when the matriarch or patriarch of the family dies. When that happens, it will either bring the family together or break them apart. I love how it brought them together to help save their land.
