Review previously placed on my blog:

I'm currently reading You've lost a lot of blood by Eric LaRocca. I'm listening to the audiobook. Have been wanting to read this author for a while, so picked it up because I was in the mood for horror. This is an adult horror book with LGBTQ+ characters.

Not sure what to think of this one. The set up of the book is a bit confusing with a lot of different parts. The writing is good, but a bit too literary for me I think. I do like the horror elements and the characters so far. Curious how the story will come together.

Well, the story did not come together. So I was a bit confused about that. Overall I did like certain aspects, but not others.

At first I hated this book. It made no sense. I couldn’t understand why there was a random novella in between the dialogue. Then the ending put it all into perspective.  When Martyr was reflecting on his own life and answering why he does the things he does made everything make sense. My favorite is when he talks about how parents set their children up for failure by telling them they are geniuses and will do great things. Then the children become disappointed when they lead mediocre lives. This reflection was all too real and made the book more than just a strange piece of fiction.

Not what I expected! I think it was pretty good, kinda interesting and a quick read, really nice prose and not too flowery writing... mostly. I like weird shit, and this was weird, but not THAT weird.
I liked the ultimate reveal of the actual story being patchwork. It makes the novella make more sense. The Martyr-Ambrose conversations were low-key insufferable, but they felt realistic.. annoyingly realistic. They were some high-brow-wannave holier than thou motherfuckers. I wanna square up with them.
I will be reading more, however; I have multiple Eric LaRocca books on my TBR.

I LOVED this book. I was intrigued until the very end! Two stories in one. We see the accounts of Marty Black, a serial killer who is also a writer and we get to read one of his stories. He story was my favorite part of the book, reminded me a the Black Mirror episode Playtest, which is one of my favorites! The ending also had an interesting twist that really turned the protagonist plot around. Really want to check out more LaRocca!
