Yeah, ok, whatever, but at least format ABBA correctly if you’re going to mention them.

Yep, this is a weird one and I liked it. There were pieces of a book inside this book and then we got to find out the reasons why it was a weird book. Recommended to those who are fascinated by serial killer correspondences.

Well, I liked his first book-sorry if I didn’t get the pronouns-but this was two stories in one. It would have been better told as two separate stories than one long story.

And they say, “You’ve lost a lot of blood.” A lot.

I haven’t read anything like this before, but maybe for a reason. Some parts felt super unnecessary, like maybe the author combined 4 different writing projects into one so that it would be long enough to be a full book.

The horror aspects were interesting. The exploration of the main characters inner thoughts was super interesting, but then it kept getting interrupted by the really boring and strange sections about other characters that I didn’t really care about.

Overall glad I read it, but wouldn’t recommend unless you are bored.

2.5 stars. This one didn’t make me want to bash my head against the wall like Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke did, and I think that’s because the author went lighter with the “romance.”

But what always disappoints me with Eric LaRocca’s books is the failed potential. They never disturb me. They just aggravate me. Any time I think they’ll build to a climax that’ll leave me shaken, they just plateau into dropped themes and confusion. I can’t feel scared when I’m too busy rereading a page because nothing made any damn sense.

This one, no surprise, was pretty confusing, especially when putting the final editor’s notes in juxtaposition with the footnotes at the end. Like did Martyr write that shit or not? What about the novella inside the novella? Who wrote that? What was Ambrose’s deal? The editor used to date Ambrose and that’s all he could give us? Why would Martyr record himself confessing? How was he never caught when he’s such a dumbass? Why was Martyr always talking about how much he wanted to kill just to kill and then backtracking and saying he only killed Waxing Priest bitches? Who wrote the poems then? The final note says his victims, but were his victims murderers too? Was Ambrose really the mastermind behind it all, and it was he that Martyr was plagiarizing? Was that why Martyr wrote the other novella, to represent how trapped he felt with Ambrose? Or did Martyr even write the novella if he was a plagiarizer??? If Martyr is a pen name, which it feels like it is, is he one person??? Is the editor just Martyr, pretending to be someone else in order to write his own story????! What’s his connection other than dating Ambrose ?????? -?/?-?)/$:&;&38:&,?? I understanding leaving some things up to the interpretation of the reader when it comes to horror, but this just feels like having a shitload of information thrown at you with little to show for it.

Also, the novella inside a novella—unclear of why that was a thing, by the way—was SO much more interesting than the novella as a whole. I would’ve loved to read more about Tamsen’s world. I don’t know if the reader was supposed to see a clear connection between Martyr and Tamsen, but it really wasn’t there. She and her story were way more interesting — but they didn’t have enough information to build off of, which made Tamsen’s story hard to follow, feel incomplete, and appear entirely disconnected from Martyr other than for the damn bug motif. Nothing new there. When they mentioned tape worm again I almost screamed. Thank fuck the author didn’t go that direction again.

the review that said just vibes was so right. still confused and usually that makes me mad but something about this book appealed to me. even with ADHD brain i finished it in one go and loved it.
