This was fine, it was fine in the way that if you don’t want to think too much but want a fantasy ‘romance’ to read this would do. I enjoyed this one more than the first book, but mainly because this one didn’t anger me!
Kailani was a better FMC to follow than Arwen, and we didn’t have the constant ‘I’m not like other girls’ mentality going on, but she did have a sense of ‘I’m better than everyone’ all the way through from the start, when she definitely wasn’t better than everyone. Raife didn’t have much of a personality either, like Drae he seemed to be a collection of features and tropes that were just waiting for their moment in the book, in a way that felt like we could have played romantasy bingo! Speaking of romantasy, I don’t feel like their was a particularly strong romantic plot, it was all or nothing between them, no tension, it was ‘we’re kissing’ to friends repeatedly and there wasn’t any undertones or anything compelling about their relationship.
Plot wise, it’s very shallow, meaning that there are lots of events, both of them almost die multiple times, but we move on so quickly that it doesn’t even matter. Another thing, this world praises the Maker, who is their god, but they also curse Hades? Why is he here? Was there not a different curse word that they would have used? My other issue is more of a world building one, Kailani is from a different country, with a different culture, but apparently there aren’t enough differences for her to have to adapt, she said one word that people didn’t understand and noted that their technology was a bit different, which wasn’t enough for me.
Everyone’s abilities are so flexible, that if a situation occurs, guess what? Their powers are perfect to solve it. There isn’t any actual problem solving and everything just works the first time. Something that did have me rolling my eyes even more than a hunter being the best in battle, was Keilani being able to fight in a battle and organise it effectively… because she read a book. You’re telling me she read a book on war and was capable of being a general the next day? No.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)
Actual review 2.5 stars
While it was easy enough to read there is virtually no world or character building. Alluded to spice but was a little insta lovey for my taste. Ending was also pretty abrupt.
