I have to admit this took me three attempts at getting into the story, it is quite slow to get going, but once i decided on attempt number three i was going to see it through regardless i was not disappointed. The buildup is extremely laborious but the payoff is superb, a wonderful mystery about lost love, identity theft, forgery, disappearances, possibly murder.
How has this book remained relatively unknown in popular society?! I absolutely loved it! I loved the way the mystery unfolded from different characters' points of view. Even though it is "classic" literature, it reads easily and doesn't have difficult language or structure. This isn't a quick read, but it never got boring. Highly recommended!!
I wonder if this is one of the first books with multiple narrators. Unfortunately, half the time I would forget whose perspective it was. Most of the voices were written very similar. I think they needed more distinction.
This was an interesting mystery without being a detective novel. Maybe it was a pioneer in this arena as well?
Aside from forgetting whose perspective we were in, this book plodded along so slowly. It was likely released like Dickens back in the day with a chapter or two at a time. It felt so long and strung out.
Ultimately, though, it was fairly interesting.

A little bit too plot driven for my liking. The characters are particularly well written though - Marian and Fosco are very unique and the narrative style helps the reader get to understand them all pretty well. Additionally, I read this for class and by this novel I was tired of reading Victorian novels… so that could factor into my enjoyment of the novel.

This is my favorite of the books I read this year. It is drawn-out and elegantly wordy but in an I-still-can’t-stop-reading way. I loved this Victorian mystery, a haunting tale and wish I had read it sooner.
