Very slow read and difficult to get into. Once you get through the half way mark it does get to be quite a nice book though
As a very big fan of stories about inter family dynamics, I absolutely adored this book. The fact that it’s a debut novel makes it even more impressive.
The story follows Greta and Valdin as they navigate their own struggles with their personal lives, including annoying love interests, the ex that got away, and the ever growing mechanics of their big family.
Again, what I loved most was the intricate weaving of the many side characters. I love when a book creates a character guide because it really can be quite helpful. But what I loved most was how some of these minor moments and character traits can help the characters jump off the page. The way the family worries about Valdin because he finds himself in strange little accidents builds to a very heartfelt reveal about his own history. But I love the way they argue. The fact that their father has to be right and argues with Valdin and calls a friend on Facebook to prove a point in front of Greta’s girlfriend on their first meeting was hilarious. Also, the little detail about Valdin throwing out the remote during Eurovision and the references to that trait throughout out are cute.
The characters feel lived in. And they are odd, but you care about every one of them. I love that Cosmo is missing and his family is a little concerned. I love that Casper is just a bit of a mess and his son is going thru a gay crisis of his own. There’s a lot going on, but it never feels like too much. Except for one subplot involving their mother. I feel like that needed a little more time.
And while I mostly loved Greta and Valdin, Valdin began to bog me down near the end. He was constantly spiraling and forgetting about the people who care about him, but I did love his relationship with Xabi. Greta was perfect. I loved her entire story and the way her relationship with Elisabeth paid off. I was always worried she was going to ruin it, but the way the characters understood each was beautiful.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this story and appreciated the attention to detail with each and every character. I look forward to seeing what the author does next.
