Reverie

This had potential and started off really interesting, but it lost me after a bit. The whole premise of jumping into others' dreams and unraveling what they really wanted was unique and fun. But the story soon devolved into dreams within dreams and people that can control what goes on in dreams and some people can get stuck in theirs and other people want to create and live in them? If you're lost right now, know that's how the second half of the book felt. Solid idea, convoluted execution.

I liked the concept but Kane sucked and never grew to care about him

Loved it! I'm always looking for books where I can see myself, and this definite fit the bill. Some minor typos, but easily overlooked. Such a great read. Can't wait for what comes next from him!

Reverie hooked me from the first chapter, and I couldn't put it down, especially at first - there is so much mystery at the beginning, so much to discover about the world, and it's such a fun and original world - but after a while, the main character really started to irritate me because he never seemed to learn from his mistakes and kept doing stupid things (I'm all for character development, but I'd like some before the last few chapters).

DNF

Making your dreams a reality comes with its own cost, but generally not a cost as dangerous as those in Ryan La Sala's Reverie.

With the few bits of memory of the incident he has, Kane Montgomery finds himself back where the police found him severely injured as he tries to figure out why everything feels so different, with both himself and reality itself. While trying to piece together the few clues and inklings he has, Kane finds himself drawn to three near-strangers, who all claim to be his friends, who seem to know more than they're sharing with him. When they're drawn into a odd and imaginative versions of the world, Kane is more determined than ever that what happened to him wasn't an accident, but rather connected with the reveries he and his friends have helped to unravel. As someone threatens this reality's livelihood with one of their own design, Kane and the Others are ready to do what they must to save their reality.

The concept of this story is enticing and imaginative with its integration of powers deriving from pain, dreams intersecting with reality, and queer representation throughout the narrative. The language devoted to the imagery of what was presented in the world was vivid and beautifully crafted; however, though the text was an entertaining story with some good, necessary points highlighted within it, the plot was a bit clunky at times as it tried to fit together into a cohesive whole with a bunch of moving parts and different worlds that were created. It was certainly quite ambitious to fold all of these elements into the same narrative thread, but not enough was done to adequately develop these aspects for a completely satisfying understanding and experience.

Overall, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The cover art is visually stunning and immediately attracted me to this book. As the fantasy elements are revealed and the reveries are explained, the reader learns along with the main character; Kane's memory is incomplete after an accident that occurred under inexplicable circumstances. Reality is malleable, and each person's perception of reality can manifest itself in dangerous ways. The most important takeaway from this novel is the representation of members of the LGBT community and the validation of their life experiences in a heteronormative society. Overall, the book was well-written and original, but for me personally, it lacked a certain element that might have allowed me to connect with the characters.

I received a free digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire.
