"He reminded himself of the few reveries he'd witnessed. They all taught him something new about the way dreams inhabit a person. Dreams can be parasites we sacrifice ourselves to. Dreams can be monstrous, beautiful things incubated in misery and hatched by spite. Or dreams can be the artifacts we excavate to discover who we really are."

This book is intense. Ride or die squad? check. mystery and suspense? check. relationship goals? ahhhh amazing. magic? OMG you have no idea.

I liked how different this book was and I enjoyed the LGBTQ+ representation. I didn’t really connect with Kane, possibly because of his memory loss? I didn’t get a great sense of who he was. I really enjoyed Dean and the Others though. I liked how some of the reveries took a LGBTQ twist to the plot line, however, overall I am still confused by the reveries. I have a lot more questions than answers. It was fun and there were moments of suspense that I enjoyed, however, most of the time I found myself not invested in the characters or plot.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with this book in exchange for honest opinion. This is available in stores now.

What drew me to the book was the comparison to Inception, a mind-bending movie that I really liked, though the gorgeous cover definitely helped. I’m a big fan of twisty plots, so I had high hopes.

This book just didn’t do it for me. It felt too big, and at times I worried that the plot had gotten away from the author. I’m not sure that makes much sense, but it’s the impression I had. It’s difficult to become immersed in a book when you are unsure if the author can deliver on what he set out to do. It was actually mildly stressful.

The characters didn’t really stand out all that much to me. One of them actually shot rainbows, and I couldn’t stop thinking of Aoyama from My Hero Academia: he has a laser that shoots from his naval and for some reason that image kept popping into my mind as I read this. Poesy, the drag queen sorceress was my favorite by far. The other characters just didn’t interest me.

The concept was interesting, but felt a bit shaky on delivery. The descriptions were fantastic, however, and I consider the prose itself the strong point of this book. La Sala definitely knows how to turn a phrase.

I think this is one of those books that many people will love; it just didn’t butter my biscuit.

It took me a little while to get into the book, mostly because I felt lost. But between wanting to solve the mystery of Kane's memories and the supporting characters, I finished reading it and was happy with the resolution and the Kane's character development.

I've been trying to finish this book for months. I'm just getting so bored and I'm more then halfway through and I don't care about any of the characters. I'm a little sad about that because I adore the Magicians and I enjoy La Sala's Tweets but I just can't get into this book.
I'll try another book of his to see if I like it better.

This was a cute story with some fun, fantastical elements, but it was just so slow that I lost interest a few times. It was a great audiobook for doing chores. Also, there was some weird sexualization of the teenage girls that just read a little out of place for this book.
