points off for being a bit dated, not enough cool gruesome deaths, and a little boring in the later half

I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a pulpy horror novel that was originally published in the late 70s. It has had held up fairly well, although there are some racism issues and the whole of the novel could be considered appropriation of Native American culture. However, these things aside, it is a quick, entertaining novel - I could picture it being a movie from the 70s or 80s that you would watch on tv late at night - somewhat shlocky almost.

this is the sort of book that would be better as a movie, primarily because you wouldn't have the protagonist's gross sexism and racism pelting your eyeballs like spittle from an irate staff sergeant. a lot of people's reviews include something about it being an old book and the problems within being par-for-course for books at the time, but that doesn't really mean a whole lot to me. the main character is unrepentantly chauvinistic, going as far as to remark upon it at one point, and he's pretty much The Worst.

that said, the plot isn't terrible and if the native american subject matter were handled a little more delicately it'd probably make a groovy movie.

A classic horror thriller that conjures up memories of old 80s movies with terrible effects and even worse dialogue.

I loved it! 4 stars.

This is classic 1978 horror that is being re-released in June, though there is no cover on goodreads for the version I have... which can be seen here http://wellwortharead.blogspot.com/2016/05/charnel-house-by-graham-masterton.html?spref=fb
I do remember reading it decades ago. In fact it was one of the first horror novels I ever snuck off my mother's book case when she thought I was too young to read them.

When an elderly gentleman complains that his house is breathing, John doesn't really know what to make of it. The gentleman does not seem like a crack pot and yet who ever heard of a breathing house? John reluctantly agrees to stop by and have a listen to this breathing, if he has the time later on that evening. He and a friend do indeed hear something that sounds like breathing, and against the owner's wishes try to communicate with it. This proves to be a fatal error, because when they leave the house a part if this evil goes with them.

This was a classic good against evil story. 4 out of 5 stars from me
