If sentences such as, "Secret Squirrel Lesson #4: All's fair in love, hockey, and meth" give you the ick, this book will make you wince repeatedly and often. Boulley relies entirely too much on inserting clunky politics into tragic backstories, as well as Daunis realizing that she's referring to someone in past tense to evoke emotion. It becomes tiresome after the third or fourth time. Either I'm too old to be reading books marketed for this age group, or the author is too old to be depicting this age group accurately. Recent high school graduates don't giggle like that. They don't label or categorize certain aspects of their lives into boxes like Hockey World. And they certainly don't say things like, "After a while, Crocodylus niloticus." Native representation in literature is good, and I wanted to like this very much. I just couldn't when I could predict the YA tropes/cringe beat for beat.

“Kindness is something that seems small, Daunis, but it’s like tossing a pebble into a pond and the ripples reach further than you thought.“. Loved this book!  The writing is really done well.  The characters are developed and complicated.  And there were no easy answers or convenient endings.  “It’s hard to reconcile not liking, even despising, parts of someone you love.  Is it possible the heart can expand to hold love as well as all the complicated emotions?”  I also learned a ton about the Ojibwe tribe in Michigan!  “Wisdom is not bestowed. In its raw state, it is the heartbreak of knowing things you wish you didn’t.“. Definitely worth reading!  5 stars

I was on the edge of my seat starting halfway through the book! I was completely hooked and also never saw anything coming. It did remind me that I don’t really know what YA is because I would not necessarily have labeled this as YA myself, but what do I know. Highly recommend.
