I listened to the audio and I highly encourage that! This book was SO good. A mystery where pieces are revealed and pulled back constantly. I was hoping for the best at all times,  but expecting the worst because Angeline Boulley really knows how to twist the plot. I am so excited to read more of this author's work. The care and love she has for her characters and their home is evident in the writing.

As I dance, I pray for Lily. For Robin. For Heather. And even for myself. For all the girls and women pushed into the abyss of expendability and invisibility. It doesn't matter that my steps are clumsy and heavy. In my mind, my feet move with lightness and speed. I am in the zone, between this world and the next.

I am not dancing in step with the drumbeats.

It is the opposite.

The drumbeats are coming from inside my heart.

My favorite part of this book was the exploration of community, and how it can guide you through grief, joy, trauma, and love. I loved learning about Ojibwe culture through the eyes of a passionate but flawed Daunis.
Powwows are not ceremonies, and yet there is something restorative about the gathering of our community.
She constantly grapples with what it means to be a good member of her community as well as her family; how to protect those she loves and what the implications of that mean. She does this while also grieving and learning what it means to love and be loved.

Parts of the book felt a bit hard to believe and the dialogue felt forced at times. However, it had an intriguing plot, and despite dark themes (see content warnings) it felt very hopeful.

I definitely plan to read more by Angeline Boulley, and look forward to the sequel of this book.
