I enjoyed most of this book, but the final 50 or so pages really screeched to a slow slog as the ending felt like one overly long exposition dump. Despite that, PKD’s writing is always enjoyable and this is no exception. A story deeply rooted in pure paranoia.
Started out pretty good then spiraled into mediocrity and finally finished up less than good to ultimately warrant a two star (just okay) rating.
I mean I just love Philip K Dick. Really, seriously, he’s one of my favorite writers.
He is so good.
The books tells the story of old town. It tells the story of Mr. Gumm who has been the longest winner of the local newspaper's contest. Everyone knows Mr. Gumm. He lives with his sister Margo and his brother in law Vic and their son Sammy. He lives next door to Mr. Bill Black who always shows up at night uninvited with food or whatever.
Mr. Gumm is getting tired, burnt out from doing contest every single day and wants to quit. He just wants to leave. There were also weird things going on in town. For example Vic was pulling on an imaginary light switch that didn’t exist one evening. Mr. Gumm was also seeing things of similar nature. One day they found a magazine showing Marilyn Monroe in the piles and piles of city ruin located close to their neighborhood. They certainly didn’t hear of Marilyn Monroe and didn’t know why the magazine would show pictures of her which was weird.
Eventually Mr. Gumm decides to leave. A lot of people try to stop him along the way. I got so hooked on this part when Mr. Gumm was trying to escape. He manages to drive so far until it gets dark and he runs into something while going uphill. He then leaves the car and walks to a house where Mrs Kesselman and her son live. He suspects that they belong with the “others”. He even finds a Time magazine with a date from 1998. He eventually he gets Brought back home where he wakes up and gets told that he was found drunk at some bar. He knows that something must’ve happened but he doesn’t remember.
He tries to escape again this time with Vic. This time they manage to leave old town. It turns out at the end that they kept him in old town because he was gets really pressured to find the location of the next missile to save the world from the lunatics over on the moon. They re-create a world from his childhood and they make up a fake contest to make him work on the figuring out the next missile location without him knowing. To him, he’s just solving a stupid puzzle.
It was intense. I loved reading the journey of escape and it definitely hits home as I always fantasized about just leaving and starting fresh since I was probably 12.
