La premisa era interesante pero nada de lo que pasa captó mi atención . Un embole la subtrama militar.

What an incredible read. It makes you question reality and existence. In a way I thought of matrix and the Truman show. A person choosing to live in a past instead of the awful future, while reality is twisted and ironic.

This was an interesting book, but the climax wasn't as impactful to me as it should have been. I think the plot was slightly spoiled beforehand, but the confusion of the protagonist became a bit irritating after a while. Didn't quite scratch the SciFi itch in the right way.

One of Philip K Dick's earliest masterpieces, and a fairly disorienting one at that, 9/10.

Funny how the blurb on the back of the edition I borrowed almost completely lies, but also necessary, I can't say any more without some degree of spoilers.

i'm trying to figure out why no one talks about this PKD novel. i really liked it. it's pared down and really lean - no alien invasions, no abject drug addiction, no space ships ... instead it feels like a top-drawer TWILIGHT ZONE or OUTER LIMITS ... suburban life in america in the late 1950's, and something is just not quite right and that feeling just bubbles along until the last 40 or 50 pages, when the climax builds into something that is hinted at, but well suppressed throughout. dang.

First published in 1959, the book captures a lot of Dick's recurrent themes concerning the nature of reality and the challenge that comes when ordinary people in ordinary lives suddenly begin feeling that the world is unravelling around them. To say any more would very much give the game away, but it’s enough to say that it all gets quite odd.

A decent read that touches on a lot of interesting points, I’d be happy to recommend this.

Most books I read by Philip K dick I seem to like, apart from the high castle one, which for some reason didn't gel with me. Maybe it was just the timing when I was reading it. Ubik has been my favourite P.K Dick book since I read it, and now I'd say this is up there alongside Ubik.

I can't point out why, but I don't think you ever can with P.K Dick books because they transcend most other reading material. I don't know how he did it; maybe he was magic. I suppose it appears it was a help to him that he suffered from psychosis himself, in terms of helping his imagination when writing anyway.

His books always do this to me where I begin thinking, 'Hmmm, not sure yet, but it's readable.' Then, somewhere along the way, I always fall deep into it. I become contained within the pages as if the book has boxed me in, and it's claustrophobic but not unpleasant, which shouldn't make sense!

It's like hypnotism, and you fall deeper into the spiral of the stories and find yourself loving them. I couldn't help thinking how I'd love this as a film that sticks true to the work. I think it would be cool to film with props and backgrounds changing out by men and women running and quickly changing the scenery like in a play but in a film. The story carries on while the people run around, changing the scenery. That's what I'm picturing in my head, anyway.
