I've been burned by this book too many times....I mostly depend on recipes for baking, and just wing it when cooking, so I can only speak to the baking recipes here but all the ones I've tried are terrible. The pumpkin bread was nigh inedible. The oatmeal cookies call for too much butter and not enough oats, resulting in cookies that spread too much even after chilling the dough for hours, and are not particularly tasty. The fudgy brownies are cakey, and the cakey brownies are just dense (flavorless) chocolate cake. The chocolate chip cookies don't even call for salt (they do in my mom's older version). The banana bread is okay, but I always increase the amount of banana because the recipe turns out too dry otherwise. (I also cut the sugar by half bc it is way too sweet otherwise)
I am not the world's best baker, but I know these recipes are to blame because I follow them closely and get bad results every time, while following recipes I've gotten passed down from family always turns out with something delicious.

This book has it all! It’s one of my favorites on my shelf! I enjoy having cookbooks with many ideas in them rather than googling for ideas.

I received mine as a Christmas gift in 1993 so it is a tad outdated. I'm not likely to find pad thai. I'm vegetarian and like to take traditional recipes from my childhood and adapt them to my veggie diet. This is my go-to cookbook for that. I don't know how much my copy differs from the latest versions. For anyone who wants just one cookbook that covers the basics to the gourmet, this one should keep you pretty happy.

I recieved this as a Christmas gift, and I read every recipe, and it's one of my go-to for general cooking recipes!

I absolutely love to cook and explore new territory in the kitchen so I was initially a little nonplussed by this wedding gift--especially since I was raised on Betty Crocker. However, I quickly discovered that these recipes tended to be more flavorful than the Betty Crocker equivalents, and the cookbook itself more likely to contain a recipe I was looking for. This is my top recommendation for your basic, general, and go-to cookbook.

Easy to read, even for someone that doesn't know the kitchen all that well like me! I would recommend this to a complete beginner to cooking.

It's an iconic cookbook. Other than the dessert recipes though there wasn't a ton for vegetarians.

This is a great go-to cookbook to remind yourself how to hard boil eggs or make pancakes. Lots of classic dishes that remind me of my childhood. I find it handy to have around, but a little dated.
