Very mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, it was very good - mystery, political plots, international travel, action and adventure! On the other hand - Mary Russell should be called Mary Sue. Totally improbable language mastery going on and don't even get me started on the brownface, holy hell, like they're really fooling anyone?! And then the whole Captain Russell bit, haha wow. I'm assuming that everyone in the palace was just drunk all the time because there was a lot of partying going on. Overall, it was fun and entertaining enough, if you can look past the problematic bits.

This is almost a filler-book, getting the characters in place for the next book. Nonetheless, I adore Mary as a character, and always enjoy reading her adventures.

I'm rereading the entire series, and enjoying it muchly.
