Chosen Prey

John Sandford

James Qatar's (an art History professor) hobby of taking pics of unknowing women and tweaking them with porn pics to form breathtaking highly sexual pieces of art has turned into a secret obsession; he first stalks these women who fuel his soul ('Chosen Prey'), woos them then finally drains their life out after he has done 'playing' with them. ⁣

Already faced with a welter of confusion in his personal life, Deputy Chief Lucas Davenport decides to take this case himself, hoping that some straightforward police work will clear his head, but as the trail begins to take some unexpected turns, it soon becomes clear that nothing is straightforward about this killer. It's up to Lucas Davenport's task team to capture this monster before he kills again. ⁣

James Qatar is one of the creepiest things ever in a book. Right up there with Hannibal Lechter---almost Great ending, too. Totally unexpected.

Obviously awesome.

Weather and Lucas are back on track. Yay because I missed her again.

Qatar is gross and slimy and I can't figure out how to say his name but that's okay. My only real annoyance is Barstad because WHY (?!?!?!) didn't you know better Lucas?! As always, I love the ethical drama that plays out and again, I love Weather. She makes everything better.

It is my opinion now that I'm twelve books into the Lucas Davenport series that you are never going to go wrong with one of these mystery/suspense stories from John Sandford. Although some are better than others, they all so far have given a suspenseful tale. Lucas Davenport, while certainly not perfect, is a character who is well written and one that you get to know so well you almost can't believe he doesn't exist somewhere in the frozen tundra of Minnesota.

This story, while certainly not unique for the series, was suitably suspenseful with a distasteful bad guy for Lucas to chase after. I was definitely pulled into the story.

I was starting it for one of my Popsugar 2019 reads but liked it enough that I finished it before 2019 so that says something.

Being this is the 12th book in this series, I knew what to expect from the characters. That said, I was still surprised by many of the things that happened in this book. It's moving on toward winter and Lucas Davenport is uneasy. Not from the weather, but Weather does figure into it. From nearly the beginning of the book, you know who did it, but how they catch him and prove it makes for intriguing reading. If you like reading about how the police solve crimes and how sometimes the law actually impedes that you will love this series and especially this book.
