The book is ok - pretty decent albeit kind of messy story, fairly interesting and somewhat faceted characters. But it reads like fanfiction; choppy, meandering, much internal and external dialogue, and short angsty semi-sentences to evoke emotion. And a few things just bugged me; like how hungry would you have to be to eat a friend? Why wouldn't you try harder to find food if that was the option you were down to considering? Also the word love gets thrown around like confetti. Or glitter in this case. Ha...

3? 3.5? Also, hell if I know how to even assess this book. Its bizarre-- bisexual faerie prostitutes try to survive in a war-torn city and not get eaten? The world building is somehow really rich and sparse at the same time; the tidbits of information we're given about the existing races and the history of the world are SO MUCH, but we don't get much of it. Paradoxically, this is part of the book's charm-just enough information coming through an unreliable narrator, who is conscious of his unreliability and even writes out the bits where people tell him what an unreliable narrator he is.

Really, this book is so weird. Its got so much going for it and I've honestly never read anything like it before. So, why doesn't it have a higher rating? I just didn't love the characters, I guess. They are perfect for this book, they ARE this book, but I just never connected with them. They all have a really intense and complicated relationship that you can feel through the writing, but it never grabbed me and made me care about them as people. I was more interested in the ~overarching~ grand scheme of things like the fate of the city, the faerie race, the politics and sociology of it all.

I'm dnfing this one before I get ragey.

Here's a quote:
In the morning, Scrap and Beckan take their usual route down to the mines. And shit, okay, a better author would insert a map right here.
Remember that for the next draft.
Once upon a time there was a writer who couldn't write a fucking book. I don't know what comes next. That whole chapter's going to need to get thrown out anyway.

Now this was in the book randomly. But then the whole thing seemed kinda random. I know the author is very young. But if you are old enough to say fuck as much as this book does you should be old enough to know you should get an editor before you publish a book.

What the heck was that?! This is a very unique and original book for sure. The beginning was slow and it took me a while to get into the story. The unreliable narrator threw me off and I think I would have liked it better if the narrator was solid. The ending was satisfying. The world is brutal and gritty which I enjoyed.

I started reading this years ago but it didn’t grab me and I do not have the time or energy to try to force myself through it, especially when it seems like I’m not the only one

This is like Weetzie Bat aka a very bad book that gets by for certain people who like tweeness and cutesy flowey language
I am not one of those people.
Highlight was when it was revealed that the fairy teens had decided to stay in an active warzone FOR NO REASON. Just bc "Not all fairies always run away! So we will choose to suffer instead!"

I just finished reading an ARC of this book. It was unlike anything I've read recently; dark, depressing, bizarre but original and interesting at the same time. The plot is complex and narrative style very different - and doesn't really start to make sense until about halfway through the novel. I'll be posting a full review on my blog next week.

Update: My full review is now online
