Though this is not my favorite type of book, I read the first one for my book group and found myself caught up in the story and caring enough what Jason and Rachel are going to do for Lyrian. This second book built the story up well and I find myself eager to get my hands on the third and last book--surprise! surprise! It is not so much suspense about what will happen--I think that is predictable for the most part--but will the Beyonders go home?

Seeds of Rebellion by Brandon Mull
Review as seen on ihavetosay.blog
SYNOPSIS
Jason is back home on earth after discovering the truth behind the word that is supposed to take down Maldor. Being home is nice but with all that’s happening in Lyrian- the secret behind the word, Rachel being left behind, and Maldor still ruling- Jason makes his way back to rejoin the fight.
What could possibly happen?
RECAP AND REVIEW
This is the second book in a trilogy, told in the third perspective where we follow Jason and Rachel on their quest to help Lyrian’s citizens defeat Maldor. Unlike the first book, we follow both of their perspectives and their thoughts.
Rachel wants to go home, but manages to be a fast learner of the magic system in Lyrian. She continues to practice and learn more about it throughout the book.
Jason makes it back and runs into people from his past who help him stay on the run from Maldor and reunite with Rachel.
I appreciate that this book was straight to the point in the beginning and got Jason back to Lyrian pretty quickly.
It is necessary to read the first book before this one. Nothing that was explained in the first book gets reexplained and there were times where I couldn’t remember certain details.
I didn’t like this one as much as the first one. I still enjoyed it but because they’re on a quest, the little hiccups in their journey get overcome and seem irrelevant to the bigger picture.
This book is appropriately titled Seed of Rebellion because it is all about setting the foundation for rebelling and achieving the ultimate goal of ending Maldor’s dictatorship.
OVERALL
Overall, I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars. I get why it is necessary for the storyline, so I can’t knock it completely. I’m still interested to see how this all ends and will be reading the last one.

o_O CLIFFHANGER!
Really? That's where you end the book? I'm so glad I'm not having to wait for the next book to be released because, if I did, I might have thrown something.... All the feelings!

Right after the prophecy when she dies!
I rarely love middle books in a series because they feel like a set up for the grand finale. With that said, I find the land of Lyrian to be very creative, with lots of descriptions of the topography and the unique beings that inhabit this weirdly wonderful world. I would prefer to see the pacing of the story clip along a bit faster, particularly for a children's series. I am also not fond of zombies! The violence seems about the same in the Seeds of Rebellion as A World Without Heroes, however, the grossness of zombies (some of which maintain vestiges of human thought) was too much for me to consider allowing my 9 year old to read this series.

I have FINALLY FINISHED IT! This book took me 15 days to read. That, like, never happens. Never. But it did! I really enjoyed the plot and quest and I was so glad that we got to reunite with some old characters from the first book. Jason and Rachel had some funny moments, and it was great to see the two companions from Earth (aka the Beyond) together again. So yeah, it was a great read with very few boring moments.
Enjoyable preteen fantasy book. Decent amount of action/adventure with like able characters and no mushy gushy romance crap.
Good second book, better than the first in the series in my opinion. The writing is a bit less juvenile, the story a bit more cohesive. It isn't a great book for adults, the themes are pretty simplistic but I find the world and magic inventive. My 10 year old loves it, my 12 year old doesn't but he likes non-fiction for some odd reason :)
A worthy sequel full of heroes, sacrifice and ZOMBIES!
