This is a FREAKY as hell book. I don't think I've seen a children's book that is more disturbing. Actually, I haven't read many ADULT books that are so disturbing.
Another one I don't recommend. My friend Jillian compared this to the Giving Tree, and I agree--it seems sweet and starts out in a nice direction, but something goes wrong. The message that a parent will love you all your life no matter what is really nice. But it crosses a line to clingy and creepy. I also don't like the illustrations. They are not quite realistic, and the image of the mom crawling across the floor (why is she crawling? I mean, I know the question is why is she sneaking into her adult son's house, but why is she always crawling?) is hard to shake.
I wanted to like this book--I even gave it as a gift. Because I love Robert Munsch's other books. They are clearly stories told orally that are put into writing and are great read-alouds. The Paper Bag Princess is one of my all-time favorite children's books. And I love his books that are illustrated by Michael Martchenko--great illustrations of families of color and families of mixed ethnicities.
