This book was such a gem to read. While I know Sara's popular songs as well as Waitress, I am not super familiar with her backstory. This collection of essays felt raw and genuine, and I connected to so many of the experiences and emotions she was feeling. Using a song to drive each chapter, you were able to get a glimpse of her inner workings. She narrates the audiobook which I definitely recommend for the mode of reading this book. A great way to wrap up my year!
Minor: Body shaming, Eating disorder
Very short. Likeable. Cool details of the writing process. Bareilles is surprisingly honest in some of her thoughts. Not a big fan of her music, but this might be worth a quick run-through if you are interested in pop music.
Loved it.
The audio book includes her singing songs AND there are bloopers at the end. That alone is worth it.

Two-thirds of this book is OK - a bit bland, a bit earnest, typical of the young-celebrity-autobiography genre. But one-third is wonderful and evocative and important: a heartfelt examination of the damage that body-shaming can inflict.
The lesson applies to her book as well. Sara Bareilles is a great singer-songwriter, and isn't pretending to be a great author. If we look at the beauty in what she has done instead of judging her against Tolstoy or Fitzgerald, we're being more fair, more humane, and getting more back.
So read this book. Even better, listen to the audiobook. It took guts for Sara to write this book, and you'll hear it in her telling more than in her writing. Besides, on the audiobook she sings.

Listened to the audiobook and that experience would get 5 stars. She sang the intro to each of the eight essays in this book and had friends and even a fan tap in to read certain sections. If you listen all the way to the end, you can hear her outtakes which is also entertaining.
I think SB is great and her essays were enjoyable. Would recommend to a friend!
