Songwriter gets discovered, has massive hit, has another one, writes musical, finds herself. Very American.

Bareilles' music isn't super my style, but I picked this book on a whim. I enjoyed learning about her and her creative process.

First Impression
I have always loved and appreciated Sara’s song-writing style, so I was happy to find out that her book was an extension of that style. Everything is honest and raw with Sara, but she doesn’t throw things in your face. She cautiously lets you in to her world and gives you pause enough to explore your own world. She structures each of the chapters to begin with the lyrics of her songs and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know one of my favorite artists a little better.

Feel
I don’t judge a book by its cover visually; I just a book by how it feels in my hands. The first column hasn’t even been filled up in the check-out sheet of this library book, so it still feels fresh and new. For a hard-backed book, it is a little thinner than I normally pick up, but Sara packs this book with the perfect amount of content! I wouldn’t want any more or any less.

Comparables
When I read Mindy Kaling’s, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, I was expecting it to be like Sara’s book actually was. I think it was an unfair expectation since I only know Mindy Kaling as her Kelly character on The Office, but I know Sara from her original songs. That is the difference between actresses and songwriters – I felt like I already knew Sara, but I just met Mindy – and that was a lot of information for an introduction!
I found this book to be a lot like Big Magic in that it quietly gave credence to the difficulties of this life while also giving you the encouragement to go for your dreams anyway!

Last Impression
My mother recently told me that she thinks your 20’s are the most tumultuous decade of your life. This did not do much to cheer me in my current state of trying to get my life in order so I actually feel like a grown-up. My mother is absolutely right, it just wasn’t a comfort to me. Sara’s book made me feel ok being melancholy right now. The letters she wrote to her past self in the Beautiful Girl chapter were so heart-breakingly honest that I just wanted to start buying copies for every 12-30 year old girl I know! Seriously, it was some powerful “You will get through this and you rock!” kind of stuff!

Would I recommend This Book?
If you are between the ages of 12 and 30 or know someone who is between the ages of 12 and 30? Absolutely! It is a great encouragement!

4.5 stars overall. 4 stars for the book itself, an extra 0.5 for the outtakes at the end of the audiobook (a four minute compilation of expletives, weird noises, and a glimpse into the silly, relaxed Sara that you don't get to see much during the preceding chapters/stories). I love Sara's music and enjoyed learning more about her life and her music writing process.

I highly suggest listening to this book as (with most memoirs) you get the most out of the experience when the author reads her own writing. Sara also sings a few lines at the start of each chapter and this helps to remind you of the lyrics pertinent to that upcoming chapter. This was Sara's first venture into writing essays and I think she did a lovely job.

I'm such a big fan of Sara Bareilles and I've been waiting to read this book for awhile now. My Uncle got it for me this Christmas and I really enjoyed it. I liked how each chapter was framed around one of her songs, and I loved each essay! Wonderfully written!

a quick read!

Inspiring and delightful

Such a warm book like comfort food. Nice to read about someone so immensely talented yet still insecure and human. I loved the self-deprecating humor and intimacy of the essays.

All heart eyes for this book 😍 Sara has been a staple in my life since high school. Many English projects were based on her songs and I love how I get an even better view of what went into my favorite songs. She's introspective, honest, funny, and so relatable. Must read!!
