I am a huge, huge fan of Sara Bareilles -- I own all of her albums, I have seen her in concert, I am going to see "Waitress" on Broadway in April -- so I knew I'd love her book. No surprise - I do. What I didn't know was that I'd be moved to tears multiple times, and that I would want to buy copies of this book for every teenage girl I know, starting with my daughter. Sara is a beautiful, brave, insightful, imperfect role model. This entire book is of course lyrical, and the chapter that was comprised of letters to her younger self was just heart-breakingly honest and pure. I really loved this book.

Precious and insightful and courageous.

Eh. I had hoped listening to this book would have made me more of a fan. Not so much.

Sara's audiobook is compiled of a series of essays about her life so far. She discusses topics that range from body image to relationships, to the blossoming of her musical career, and the time she spent living in Italy. She describes her songwriting process and her inspiration, as well as her experience growing up with her sisters. Her stories are heartfelt and also funny at times. My favorite part of this audiobook was the songs at the beginning of each chapter and the description of her inspiration for those pieces of music. Sara has a beautiful voice and I enjoyed getting to know more about her life. Overall I would have liked more stories, and the themes were a little disjointed at times.

I've been waiting to read this book since I first heard it was going to be a reality a few years back. Sara Bareilles is a very gifted musician, and my relationship to her music is ever-evolving. I love some songs fiercely, hate others, and come to appreciate a few I overlooked as I continue to experience life.

Sara's book complements her music for in that familiar way. I embraced her chapters about the human condition (like "Gravity" and her issues with body image) as though they were old friends, and skimmed through the information I never really want to know about an artist (family life.) Much like her music, Sara plays with a few different forms in book, which I found fun and endearing.
Ultimately, there are a lot of moments in this book where I want to sit next to Sara with a blanket and some pizza and say, "Girl, me too. Me too." And I think that is the point.

This book is a love letter to women, to music, to anyone who's ever felt less than, and to artists. It's honest, raw, hilarious, articulate, poignant, and it is the perfect embodiment of everything I love about Sara Bareilles. You don't have to love her music to love this book, which surprised me, and this is much more than she has shared of herself outside of her music in her entire career, which is admirable and brings her fans even closer into her inner circle, a place we've already visited in each of her songs.

Listening to the book on audio was a real treat because it's narrated by Sara and she sings the song for each essay a capella at the beginning of the chapter. "Gravity" has always been one of my favorite songs and now it will remain in my top five forever, understanding why it has always so obviously been a heart song. The intro is read by Ben Folds and Jack Antonoff reads a bit as well, someone I now intend to follow more closely after Sara's description of him as an artist and just a really cool guy. If you listen to the audio, listen ALL the way through, because the easter egg outtakes at the VERY end of the recording are motherfucking hilarious. I can't wait to get my signed copy in the mail, so that I can bookmark several phrases and hold it in my hands. :)

This was so much more than I expected. Thank you, Sara.
