I adore Sara Bareilles and this short but lovely book made me adore her even more. It was a pleasure to learn about the influences behind her music and her creative process.

Fun and fabulous while also being raw and emotional , an amazing insight in to Sara’s life as a huge super fan I already knew a lot about her but this book taught me so much that I didn’t know and was so interesting to learn. I really recommend listening to the audiobook alongside the physical book as it really enhances the experience and allows Sara’s personality to shine through even more.

It was really interesting to hear about Sara's writing process and some of the experiences that shaped her. Some parts were overly sentimental to the point that it felt cheesy, but the chapter titled "Brave" was completely amazing. It was about the development of her song "Brave" and what it means to her. It's also my favorite song of hers and one that always inspires me.

I really like learning about the stories behind songs and this book gives you a nice look at the inspiration behind some of Sara's songs as well as the writing process she went through for them. It deepened my appreciation for the songs I already new and turned me onto other songs by her that I have not heard before. If you can, I highly recommend listening to the audio book version of this. Not only does Sara read it herself, but she sings part of each song accompanying each essay in a cappella which was such a great treat!

It's easy to look at a famous and successful person and think they must have it all figured out. They must not have any self doubt, must have been popular in high school. must know exactly what they want and how to get it. In this collection of essays, Sara Bareilles opens herself up and shows us her vulnerability. From her left-over issues from being the fat kid in school to heartbreak from her first love to her uncertainty about where she fits into the music industry, she shares with us feelings we regular folk can relate to. My favorite part was the chapter of letters she wrote to her younger self. Perspective is a wonderful thing.

If you can, listen to the audiobook because she sings! Also, stay tuned until the very end for outtakes. :)

Sounds Like Me is a really enjoyable memoir. I've liked Sara's music since I first heard Brave back in high school (still one of the first songs I listen to when I'm feeling defeated and need a reminder that I CAN do it) but I'd never really looked much into the stories behind her songs, or into her life. So, when I saw she had a book out I was keen to read it and I really liked it. Of course as a memoir this is mostly focussed on her life related to music- the ways music healed her and provided an outlet for her emotions and a way for her to express herself, and the frustrations she encountered navigating her career etc. Throughout all of her essays in this book Sara is so relatable and there are many humorous moments, but she also comes across as very genuine and supportive of people and their own struggles. Definitely recommend this to fans, or even anyone just looking for an easy, uplifting memoir!
