Not sure I agree with a lot of the reviews on this one. Took a lot of pages to really become invested, many of the characters seem to have underdeveloped arcs (or getting from point A to point B in their character arc was a bit stingy), the overall plot is mediocre, and there just aren’t enough details for some of the more intriguing elements (a limbless being that is a Jedi - what???). I think this book could have been developed more but I’m grateful for the entertainment it did provide.
Just wasn't hitting the spot; may read again some day
"So stuff is just kinda happening, huh?"
So says Ryan George in the great pitch meeting video for The Rise of Skywalker. And it accurately describes how I felt during most of this book.
To be fair, I do think the book has a pretty strong finish. Everything comes together pretty well, and the reasons behind everything introduced earlier in the book start to make sense. But for most of the way, I found myself wondering why any of it mattered or why I should care. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters. I'm not sure why.
It has a lot of fun elements, to be sure. It's a decently enjoyable book. I still think Claudia Gray is probably the best author in the Star Wars canon right now, at least based on what I've read so far. But I don't know, this one just didn't land for me. I wonder if it suffers from a design by committee as part of the High Republic project.
I guess I'm really emphasizing the negative things in this review. It's really not a bad book, just sort of okay. More than okay, I guess, since I'm giving it three stars. But I keep trying to get into this High Republic thing and so far I'm just underwhelmed.

Spoiler
I was a little disappointed with the Drengir. I'd heard about them from Star Wars Explained, and I think I was expecting something different. I'm sure in real life they would be a scary enemy, but to me they just end up sort of goofy. I was hoping for something more truly alien and incomprehensible. The fact that they can speak the same language as the other characters and carry blasters around kind of spoils it for me.I guess I'm really emphasizing the negative things in this review. I really love the High Republic as a setting, it's so great to see the Jedi in a totally different state to the movies. This first YA High Republic book is solid, although nothing incredible. Having enjoyed Claudia Gray's Master and Apprentice book, I was hoping this would be as good

Claudia Gray once again delivers another instant favorite! Into the Dark is overflowing with loveable characters full of depth, growth, and quirks. We take our next steps deeper into The High Republic and find even more danger and darkness along the way. I love how the story takes a few of the Star Wars archetypes we are so familiar with and changes them up. For example, our main character Reath Silas is a Padawan who likes books and studying the archives and dislikes adventure and excitement! In a galaxy as massive and deep as Star Wars, it's great when storytellers find ways to change things up and give us something new.
The story is full of adventure (despite Reath's wishes,) exploration, mystery, and darkness! The tone of the book surprised me as it went along. While I wouldn't call it a horror story, there were some thrilling moments and scares for our characters along the way. There were countless details that I loved like the Kyber Arch, Padawan parties, the Amaxines, under the Jedi Temple, Wayseeking, the Byne Guild, and the Starlight Beacon! The characters bring originality and depth to the tale and I hope we see more of them in the future.
Especially Leox.
And Geode.
And Orla.
Okay just give me everyone...
