I suspected this might turn out too colorful for me, knowing it involved a travelling circus, but since it was described as noir horror, I wanted to give it a try. It might be good book, but it wasn't my cup of necrophilia and I didn't finish.

Moody, atmospheric horror. I liked the characters and the old-timey feel. The twist in the end - maybe not so much. Still, it was a highly enjoyable read, and made me want to check out more of Kurtz's work.

Really 3.5 stars. This is a wild book. I enjoyed it but I also think that it went a little insane towards the end, much to the detriment of the overall plot and tone.

Closer to a 3.5, but something I fully enjoyed with some really smooth-flowing prose to go along with a few topics throughout that act as catnip for me anyway. A really solid horror read.

I had hoped for horror that'd scare, but this did not hit the right buttons for me. Besides that, I wish the twist had foreshadowing of any sort. The last third or so of the book is a jumble of jump cuts, convenient epiphanies, and gory sight gags as it winds up around to the end. Instead of allowing the reader to sit with any of the horror, the book speeds through image after image, moment after moment, losing all impact.
