I need a copy of "I hated, hated, hated this movie" (or whatever the title is) because Ebert and I generally agree on the really crappy aspects of film.

I’d only seen a little more than half the movies Ebert hated. He didn’t just say they were trash, he’d remind those involved they were better than this, and what the hell were they thinking? Really enjoyed some of his metaphors.

A very moreish book - cause it's a collection of shortish reviews and they all make pretty easy reading, you just keep reading the next one. Only enjoyable if you like reading short reviews/summaries of bad films - it's exactly what it says on the tin - but great if you like that. The summaries are usually far more enjoyable than the film itself and although Ebert isn't a proper comedian, he's witty enough that I've laughed out loud quite a bit and smiled even more. Sometimes his moral and political judgements are very, very off (for example, his portrayal of a few films where women are constantly violent to men as men-hating... alas! he has no idea) and there are some reviews which aren't up to much - whether cause the film is so average or cause of Ebert's poor writing or hang-ups. It's definitely enjoyable if you like reading about bad movies but the quality is pretty variable. The great reviews are a lot of fun though.

November 2018: re-reading for both fun and Friday Night Bad Movies & Junk Food fodder. Still 4 stars. He was best when he hated a movie.

June 2007: originally read, 4 stars.

I needed some light reading while I was on vacation and I was missing Roger Ebert anyway (each time a terrible movie comes out my heart lets out a little pang that I'll never know how much he hated it) so I went back to this old standby. I enjoyed it less this time than I had in the past and I'm not exactly sure why. In some of the reviews he used some gimmicks I found annoying and even though he always prefaced a horror review by telling us that he was a horror fan, I never quite bought it. He was a fan of great horror movies, not of horror as a genre and there's a difference, especially when it comes to reviewing movies that are geared specifically towards fans of the genre. Still for my money he was one of the consistently great critics out there and I wish he was still around.

This is such a great idea for a book, and Ebert's writing is a delight to read. I love picking this up and reading excerpts when I need a quick smile.

Roger Ebert writes eloquently about great movies, but he is never more fun to read than when he pans bad movies.

This book kicked off with a hilarious intro and plunged into Ebert's reviews of bad movies released since 2000 or so. The only thing that could improve this book would be a concluding chapter, something bringing everything back together that doesn't leave the book feeling so open-ended.
