I have read this several times. I love the complexity of it, as well as it's simplicity.
If you are into love stories - this has a great one - of loyalty, devotion, and self-sacrifice.
If you are into studies of human nature - here too. It explores mob-mentality, politics, truth as it relates to justice, aspirations of power and the willingness to achieve that end regardless of the cost to others. And, underlying everything, the complete destructive capacity of jealousy. The danger of covetousness. All intertwined with history.
This is a little known book, hidden on the shelves behind "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". Forget those for now, and read this one. I'll bet that you won't regret it.

The Black Tulip does not feature the swashbuckling we have come to expect from the historical novels of Alexandre Dumas. Even though it begins with two innocent men being torn limb from limb by a mob, it is actually a romantic comedy about the mania for tulips in the 17th Century. The novel is funny, romantic, and well written. Although some historians currently believe that reports of tulip mania are exaggerated, this novel seems to accurately reflect what was earlier reported of this odd period of history.

Kolay okunan ve romantizm akımının izlerini fazlasıyla taşıyan bir eser. 17.yy Hollanda'sında ''lale çılgınlığı'' olarak bilinen dönemde geçiyor. Tek tutkusu lale yetiştirmek olan bir soylunun daha önce kimsenin üretmeyi başaramadığı siyah laleyi üretmesini konu alıyor. Fakat kahramanımız kıskanç bir adam yüzünden esaretle, aşkla ve fedakarlıkla sınanmak zorunda kalıyor. Konu kısaca bu olsa da biz dönemin siyasi ve sosyokültürel gelişmelerine tanık oluyoruz. İlgimi siyah lale ve üreticisinin hayatından çok bu tarihsel kısmı çekti okurken. İyilerin mutluluğa erişeceği, kötülerin cezasını çekeceği 'masalsı' ve tahmin edilebilir bir kurgusu vardı. Gerçekçiliği tercih ettiğim için bana göre değildi. Orta okulda ödev verildiği zaman okusaydım bayılırdım muhtemelen :') Klasiklere başlamak isteyenlere ve romantizmden hoşlananlara önerilir.
