This was such a fun novel! I really enjoyed the tulip mania combined with the political intrigue in Holland of the time. While I didn't grow very attached to the characters, this was an adventurous, pacey book. I loved the obsession over the black tulip and how such a small plant can create such a dynamic plot. There was subtle humor throughout, and the audiobook narrator (Peter Joyce) was fantastic. I much prefer The Count of Monte Cristo, but if you are looking for a fun, quick read, I would recommend The Black Tulip.

Quote:

She raised her lovely eyes to look at William, her limpid eyes, full of such penetrating intelligence that they found mercy in the depths of his dark heart, sleeping a sleep like that of death.

Very little fictional work by Dutch authors are available in English about the Dutch golden age. Therefore, it is surprising to find work by the famous French author Alexandre Dumas portraying a story of love, jealousy, and obsession around tulips - all set against the political upheaval occurring in revolutionary Netherlands. While the story construction and romance Dumas develops for the protagonist is severely dated, some of the reflections on Dutch society was rewarding for a person who currently lives in the Netherlands. "The Black Tulip" is not the high point of Dumas' career but well worth a read for lovers of the Netherlands and anyone else who want a small insight into the Dutch character (or at least how they want to be viewed).

as dabar suprantu, kodel zmones griebiasi skaityti grafa monte krista, nors ir sis romanas yra virs tukstancio puslapiu. visgi autorius istorija delioja kaip pasaka. sulauzo ketvirtaja siena, smaikstauja ir miglotai uzsimena apie ateity, taigi turim visazini kalbantyji.
be to, kad patiko pasakojimo budas ir istorija savotiska, prisipainioje skirtingu siuzeto liniju, bet pabaiga vis tiek laiminga
