Perhaps if I had seen the show more recently this would have been better. It just felt like the common Dracula comic that was too dark to tell what was going on and not indept enough to make me care.

After finishing the show, I wanted so much more that I had to go online and read this. It serves as a prequel to the show but doesn't do the greatest job adding more plot or details to the story. Still, I loved the show so much that I couldn't help but enjoy this too.

For me, this graphic novel felt extremely rushed. The story's plot was also very underwhelming and simplistic. It does not rise to the quality of the TV show, unfortunately. Also, I cannot explain what happened to the dialogue, it had moments when it was great and moments when it... wasn't. It was just MEH.

I do miss this show! The sets, costumes, hair, special effects makeup, characters - all of it. Volume 1 of the comics is a prequel to the TV series. I enjoyed this graphic novel - especially the art! Volume 2 will be released in November and will pick the storyline up where the series finale left off. Can't wait!

Beautiful art, wanted it to be longer and more fleshed out

I didn't love the artwork. Some images were just too undetailed and dark to see well.

I love Penny Dreadful. It was a beautiful, poetic, wonderfully written show that was ended far too soon. I missed the characters, and this prequel comic does fill the void just a bit, but it is missing the brilliant and poetic writing of the show ( as well as some favorite characters). There are no musings of Tennyson or Keats, but merely blunt dialogue that seemed stiff at times. It does fill in the gap before the events of series 1, as the series began with Vanessa and Sir Malcolm in the middle of their search for Mina. The cover art and the variants are beautiful and the likeness to Eva Green and Timothy Dalton are fantastic. However, some of the panels were too dark and the art style a bit too blurred to make out what was happening.

Overall, it was okay. I wish instead of a prequel, it had been a continuation of the show or a midquel that answered some of the unanswered questions of the sadly, much too rushed final episodes.
