This is a Child Soldiers memoir in the Sierra Leone war. Hearing about it in the news and reading the memoir are 2 different things altogether. I was shocked by whatever I read and I don’t think I will be this shocked for a long time to come. Sad, horrifying and unbelievable.
“My squad was my family, my gun was my provider and protector, and my rule was to kill or be killed. The extent of my thoughts didn’t go much beyond that. “
This book was difficult to read emotionally but as far as the writing is concerned, it was surpringly good. It was what I would call simple yet effective. This is one of the books that deserves to be read.

I cannot even begin to fathom... Truthfully, I am not sure I can even write a review. I think that we should all take opportunities in our lives to learn how others live. To ground ourselves by understanding our lives in stark contrast to others in this very same world and time.
A beautiful balance between the violence of war and the resilience of the human spirit, especially the spirit of a child. Not for the faint of heart, but a good read start to finish.
This isn't the kind of book one rates because it's not for entertainment. I won't critique his style or his story or what he did or didn't tell because that's not what this book was about. I wouldn't want to re-read because it was too sad. But this book was an interesting depiction of life during the war. Lots of walking. He skims over the years he was a soldier- which I totally understand. But I thought that would be the focus of the book- sort of a tell-all of the crimes he had been forced to commit. But it wasn't and I can respect that.

before i started reading this book i did some research on the author. let me tell you how touched i was by his story, and i knew that after reading this book i would view the world a bit differently. sometimes the book became so graphic i could barely continue reading, i was in shock. i absolutely loved the main characters and the plot. you really get to follow the characters through everything, thick and even more thick, no thin. beah is also just an amazing author who really put his own experiences into great words, not everyone can do that.
Haunting. Makes you think in a way you wouldn't dream of.
