read for a uni project, here are the quotes i'm taking for the essay:
“True character is revealed in the choices a human being makes under pressure - the greater the pressure, the deeper the revelation, the truer the choice to the character's essential nature.”

“Story isn’t a flight from reality but a vehicle that carries us on our search for reality, our best effort to make sense out of the anarchy of existence.”

“You may think you know, but you don't know you know until you can write it down. Research is not daydreaming. Explore your past, relive it, then write it down. In your head it's only memory, but written down it becomes working knowledge. Now with the bile of fear in your belly, write an honest, one-of-a-kind scene.”

“an ending must be both “inevitable and unexpected.”

I think he likes Chinatown and Casablanca very much.

Pretentious a.f., but still informative and inspiring enough to merit even multiple reads. I have to admit though that the examples whith which McKee illustrates his points are a bit dusty. A new edition would be quite interesting.

I wasn't particularly fond of it. I was looking for advice and was given information that I already knew (for the most part).

While there are some valuable insights and worthwhile observations overall this is less a book about screening and more about the movie making business with a focus on the script. I found the endless lists and references to genres and various films and box office performance tedious and ill-suited to a book about 'Story', at least the preponderance of said material.

I think writers would be better served reading Syd Field's book vs tackling this tome. However, if you are more of a generalist with an interest in the film business then you will likely find this more worth your time.

This book is literally the best thing I’ve ever read. It is something I will always keep on my shelf and read again and again. I have become a better storyteller because of it.
