I read this for the first time at least 15 years ago for my Tween Bookclub at the library.

Picked it up for 2$ on kindle and decided to reread it for nostalgia. 15 years later it was still a worthwhile read and I intend to borrow the second book from the library.

I probably would have liked this more when I was younger. Good read for the age it’s intended for.

I think it’s a great childrens book that explores some heavier topics (like greed or loss) while still being appropriate and fun. I definitely really enjoyed it when I was younger, and it was interesting to reread.

This was a mostly enjoyable and easy read. I loved this series as a child, so it was really fun to return to it.

The blatant fatphobia throughout really brought the book down though. Using fatness to
code for evil, corruption, and overindulgence with the mayor's character was really fucked up and violent.
I know it is a common trope in media and popular culture, but that doesn't excuse it.
