I might have enjoyed it more if the backstory for the MMC was not too dark. As someone who has family with mental illness, I felt that this was a horrible parallel. Definitely avoid if you suffer from mental illness or it is your trigger.

I really enjoyed this story! I love the main characters, Max and Tis have a great dynamic, and I really love their growing relationship. Max is a refreshing MMC who is grumpy, traumatized, and badass.  Tis has overcome so much and is still soft, while being a badass and trying to protect everyone. She's a classic heroine, but she actually seems to ask for help sometimes AND doesn't run into situations alone if she can manage it. The plot is interesting, there are alot of morally gray characters, as well as a super interesting magic system. It's not as fleshed out as say a high fantasy novel, but the world-building and magic system are relatively easy to understand and very intriguing! I honestly can't wait to dive into the second book. I'm very glad that this is a completed series, because if I had to wait I would be really upset.

PLEASE check the trigger warnings for this book. There is a wide range of things that are described versus things that are mentioned as background events, but it could be very bad if you go in without warnings.

Did not love the book, it was very cliché & it was difficult to follow the main love story/interest.

“Men want power because it makes them feel good. Women want power because it lets them do things.”

This was quite easy to read and the world-building didn't feel like a big info dump. I’m still kind of confused with the magic system so I hope more info on that is shown in the next book/s.

Tisaanah was such a strong character and I can’t help but root for her in whatever she does. Murder? Revenge? Proving men wrong? I will be in the back cheering. Max’s character was also good, and he had such great development in my opinion. I just want to wrap these two in a blanket and give them a big hug for all they’ve been through, and all they’re about to go through. I loved that the romance between them was a slow burn. They developed a strong friendship and trusted each other with their deepest and darkest secrets first before anything romantic happened to them.

I’m really excited to read the rest of the books because I need more of Tisaanah and Max. Also, special mention to Sammerin and Moth because I found them really funny.

I listened to the audiobook for this but I didn’t like the male narrator, sorry.
