Maria Ressa is fantastically smart and accomplished and well deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. I learned a lot of unsettling information regarding our media and news systems and how much they are being manipulated. This book is quite a cautionary tale. I got a little bored in the second half which was so much about lawsuits and court drama and I wanted to know more what was happening in the Philipines.
An eye-opening, frank memoir by Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa, examining the effects of social media and authoritarianism through the lens of her career in journalism, primarily focused on her native country, the Philippines. Ressa details the countless challenges she faced, from death threats to actual imprisonment for crimes she didn’t commit, and her collaborations with human rights lawyers like Amal Clooney to fight for her freedom. Fascinating and harrowing in equal measure, I highly recommend this book, especially for anyone who works in journalism or librarianship.

This certainly was not what was advertised - there was not much actionable information in this book about how to stand up to a dictator imo. I'm not denying the importance of journalist's work in uncovering and shining light on corrupt and abusive behavior, but everyday people can't really do that. In the end, it was an interesting read about an interesting person, but it also could have gotten more personal. It seemed to be trying to do too many things.
