This book challenged my preconceptions on the digital world and the relationship that it has to misinformation, facts and the truth. Highly recommend

A must-read for anyone who stares at the scary rise of fascism across the world. The autobiographical o Nobel Laureate who like us thought technology that promised individual empowerment is now the machinery for fanning hate.
What was new to me and which sounds all too familiar with the recent nationalistic leaders' rise - was the carefully-orchestrated progress of Duterte through metanarratives, patriotic trolling, fear-mongering, and later hijack of Government machinery to keep him in power.

I just finished this and I am gutted. Maria Ressa, a hero in journalism who is still fighting the fight. She has given her life for truth and justice and shares her story as a lesson and warning to those of us facing fascism.

What's happening to Philippine journalism is what is happening to all of the journalists in non-democratic country. It's sad to see that something similar to what Maria has been through is something that is also true to Thailand, Myanmar, and other authoritarian countries.

There is a point in this book about social media that I quite disagreed in the first part because I think she put all the blame to Facebook. However, after realized that there was the case of Cambridge Analytica, I think this world need to reconsider the fairness of Social media algorithm priority not only Facebook's. This book raises awareness of authoritarian attempts to use social media to create 'us against them' situation and that would only worsen the social fragmentation and weakened democracy.

Holy Week read no. 2

Another spot in best reads of 2023 secured.

I hope I can draft a decent review for this book before my scheduled bookstagram post because this deserves all the words.

So many topics were touched revolving the current social climate in Philippines and how hands that were not seen in the big picture were controlling the flow and narrative of our fast-changing lives.

I really hope more people will read this book!

This book will stick with me for a long time. I’m amazed by Maria Ressa’s commitment to her work and to bringing truth to light. It’s frightening to read just how much social media has impacted the spread of information (mostly for the worst). I highly recommend this especially during election season!
