Masterfully written. This is his best work.
Action packed from start to finish, in classic Salvatore style, this book is entertaining, but my praise ends there. Salvatore fails in unspectacular fashion to buck the comic-book feel Drizzt novels have taken on. His struggle closing story lines (Crenshinibon again? Really? How many books do we have to suffer through with a silly magical crystal as the primary antagonist?) and especially with killing off characters is painfully evident, not only through the meandering chapters, but during the "internal dialogue" sequences, which actually read more like Salvatore's internal debates regarding the direction of the series than Drizzt's thoughts concerning events at hand. The ending feels rushed, as if Salvatore wanted to get the unsavory business of moving the entire story forward over with. And even in that attempt he doesn't go far enough. This book had rave reviews, but in my mind it is simply a continuation of the downward spiral of this series, although I will keep reading as I am committed to the journey at this point.
So I had to take a bit of a leap with this one. The second book in transitions was by far one of my least favorite in all of Drizzt's adventures, so I didnt exactly have high hopes for this one. So when reading through I began a little skeptical and was happily surprised with the book overall. There are some items that I'm not too keen on (the combination of 3 entities to create a super entity / the "death" of a few main characters who never really die, but just float to some other land) but in the same there was a lot to love (the companionship prevelant in Drizzt's adventures / bringing the majority of characters full circle / etc). Honestly, this isnt Salvatore's finest, but its steps above the Pirate King.
I did find some minor annoyance throughout the book as several portions were recited over and over. Its like Salvatore was trying to fill pages and felt the need to reiterate again the same thing he said previously. hmm. Hopefully the next novel is better.

This is probably the best Drizzt novel since The Dark Elf Trilogy came out. I tend to enjoy Mr Salvatore's non-Drizzt novels a little bit more, with [b:Mortalis|239068|Mortalis (Corona The DemonWars Saga)|R.A. Salvatore|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1320497116s/239068.jpg|2085423] being my all time favorite, probably because he doesn't have to confine himself to the predefined D&D rules/world. As an author, I'm sure he revels in the creative aspects of his own world building. But this one is the final novel in the "Transitions" trilogy and he clearly has poured his heart and creative talents into it. I can't offer much about the plot without major spoilage, even though those beans have been spilled by other reviewers here. Suffice it to say I thought it was fast paced, covered a lot of characters and their interaction, and was quite emotional. I especially enjoyed meeting up with old friends like Cadderly and the Cleric Qunitet crowd. Looking forward to the next set.
