An interesting caste system from which develops an equally interesting magic system. The worldbuilding is good; the characters have believable arcs. There are books doing similar work that do it with perhaps a bit more pep (there's probably 30-50 pages of walking here that might have been edited), but this is highly readable.

4.5 stars

The Merciful Crow made me laugh, made me cry and squeak with anticipation. I’m so glad I read it. It was a slow start but sticking with it was totally worth it.

This had everything I could have wanted from a fantasy. The main characters were all people of colour, the magic system was super interesting and the world was so big and vast.

Fie is a kick-ass female protagonist and I loved her a lot. Proving to the world, and herself, that not only is she capable of doing anything she puts her mind to but doing it against all odds.

I've read lots of YA before and even though the beginning of "The Merciful Crow" was a bit slow, by the end I was so engrossed. I love Fie and think she's a great character. I also think this book is timely in terms of exemplifying things like racism and discrimination.

I devoured this book towards the end, total page turner, 10/10 would recommend <3

I'm obsessed with the world and the characters in this book, and I was gripped right from the start! Love love love!

Dnf. The worldbuilding was too frustrating and definitely not my thing, so I finally had to pass.

I picked this one up after DNFing "The Bone Ships." It's always a relief to find a book that works on the heels of one that does not. Owens creates a complex world with an unjust caste system that unspools in a way that keeps the reader engaged. I really appreciated how Owens developed the complex main character who struggles to adapt to the new mantle of leadership thrust upon her as well as the drive to fulfill her oat to the potential future leader of the kingdom that ruthlessly oppresses her people simply for the fact that they exist. Owens also adds depth to the side characters which helps the reader fully immerse in the story. I look forward to reading the sequel as well as her recently concluded trilogy.
