I was never super excited to pick it up, but once I was reading it, I never wanted to put it down.

The Merciful crow looked to be something special but, in reality, it let me down.
setting and the world in general, the culture of people from different caste(usually a kind of bird) with different power(like tracking people or controlling other's emotions) was very well done.
the problem for me was the characters.
Fia wasn't a bad character it's just that I was never wholly invested in her. the other characters especially the prince were terrible, his hawk bodyguard wasn't as bad as him but the sudden romance between him and Fia was the worst part of the book, and the ending was not at all satisfying to me.

I haven’t really been liking the new YA romance fantasy type books, but this one I’d say is a cut above the rest. While the events still took just a month to occur, the romance didn’t feel forced nor like it was there’s just for the sake of it being there. That’s been my biggest gripe which made me like this book more than others of its type.
The magic system was also super unique! The magic’s inspiration comes from the plague doctor grows from the past but also ties in phoenix’s and a bunch of other bird themed social classes

UNO DE LOS MEJORES LIBROS QUE HE LEÍDO, LA CONSTRUCCIÓN DE PERSONAJES, LA PROFUNDIDAD DEL MUNDO QUE CREA, TODAS LAS ESCENAS DE ACCIÓN Y LAS SENSACIONES QUE LEVANTA CON PALABRAS SON INDESCRIPTIBLES

Just couldn't get into it.
Just couldn't get into it.
I initially picked this up because the blurb said it was for fans of The Grishaverse series, which I am. I have to say that it probably has the same readability (I mean, I did stay up way too late on a work night to finish it) and it's solid for the first entry in a series. I'm certainly looking forward to the next one.
I appreciate that there's a sense of knowing in the way this book goes; in so many series especially, you can really tell when the author is just filling in bits to get to the part of the story they REALLY WANTED TO WRITE, and I don't sense this much here. It's 400 pages that go very quickly and enjoyably, at least for me.

Didn't think I'd enjoy this one as much as I did after the first few pages where I was annoyed at the stereotypical YA Fantasy character constellation. A sort of outlaw, a prince in trouble, a sexy guardsman, but what can I say? I liked it.
The world building was interesting even though I would've wanted to know more. There are several casts, each having potentially different magical abilities. The lowest cast, the Crowd, deal with the dying people from other casts, people that die of a sort of Black Death plague only the crows cannot catch. They administer the last rites and burn the bodies while wearing masks like the Black Death doctors did. Our protagonist, Fie, is such a crow and chief to be of these bands (not murders, lol) of Crows. She has sworn an oath but also has to take care of her own. Will she be able to achieve both?
Some things annoyed me but this was extremely entertaining so, whatever. Guilty Pleasure I guess. World could've been fleshed out a bit more, our prince was a bit single dimensional in parts, but there was some development on all parts so yeah. Oh and I liked the representation of bisexuality.

Wow I really loved this book.
The Crows protect the entire country by helping prevent the spread of the plague and in return they are hunted down and spat on and beaten and…..just absolutely horrible things happen to them. And it’s not like they’re bad people either. They abhor stealing and only ask for what can be given in payment. I just don’t get it.
Wow I really loved this book.
