A selection of mountaineering articles covering a lot of ground. It's not a technical book, it will not teach you how to climb, but it does provide a glimpse into the psyche of the people undertaking these kind of adventures.
Before Jon Krakauer wrote Into the Wild or Into Thin Air, he wrote a collection of mountaineering tales called Eiger Dreams. No one does mountaineer writing like Krakauer. Every story in this collection is equally compelling and leaves you wondering why people climb mountains in the first place!
My favourite tales were about the Burgess Boys and the Devil's Thumb. Some of the stories include first-hand accounts from Krakauer, and others are about other climbers. But all the stories have facts about mountaineering that are accessible and easy to understand even if you don’t climb. Really enjoyed this collection.

Closer to a 3.5. Definitely a mixed bag of articles and stories with some more compelling reads than others. I still love Krakauer's writing and it was entertaining to read of the call of the mountains whilst hiking the Inca Trail.
