I loved the first novel, [b:The Vanishing Season|30654172|The Vanishing Season (Ellery Hathaway, #1)|Joanna Schaffhausen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1487466538l/30654172._SY75_.jpg|51199114], in the Ellery Hathaway series, so maybe my expectations were too high for the second novel. I just didn't connect with the story as much. The novel takes up from where the first book ended, Ellery is forced on leave to get herself sorted out. Now that everyone knows Ellery's secrets she has become a bit of a liability to the police force. She is forced to go to group counselling and instead of getting help, she suspects one of the members of something nefarious. Ellery turns to Reed Markham again, and he has to decide if he will drop things for Ellery again. I felt like this novel was more about the case than Ellery and Reed.

***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***

Police officer Ellery Hathaway is on involuntary leave from her job because she shot a murderer in cold blood and refuses to apologize for it. Forced into group therapy for victims of violent crime, Ellery immediately finds higher priorities than "getting in touch with her feelings."

For one, she suspects a fellow group member may have helped to convict the wrong man for a deadly arson incident years ago. For another, Ellery finds herself in the desperate clutches of a woman who survived a brutal rape. He is still out there, this man with the Spider-Man-like ability to climb through bedroom windows, and his victim beseeches Ellery for help in capturing her attacker.

my opinion - decent detective kinda mystery thriller
chemistry between reed and ellery is got to next level
easy read , humor little bit not much , dark
put on edge sometime

I loved the first one in this series so much I immediately dived into this one straight away. While enjoyable and twist filled, I didn't like this one as much as the first. There were two plots going on; one an arson and the other a sexual assault. I found I was invested in one of these more than the other. I adore Ellery and Reed and this makes me want to keep reading just to see what happens. I will definitely keep reading this series and am looking forward to seeing where this series goes.

I love this series but I think the first book will always hold a special place in my heart, and this one didn't feel as strong, still great tho. I love screaming and talking outloud to the characters and just genuinely being completely unhinged while I read and these characters make that very easy. the one critique I have is that I would have preferred one main story as opposed to two. both of the main plots, the past case involving the fire and the search for Wendy's rapist, are interesting in their own right and I appreciate both stories but it makes me question if the book had picked one or the other and focused on it if it would have been as strong. I don't know if that makes sense. I guess in the first book I liked that it all revolved around the one case, and with this one when we would be talking about the fire case I would be saying "okay but what about wendy tho?" and vice versa. also I definitely could have missed it bc I read this in one sitting in a few hours but
who the hell torched Ellie's truck?

I somehow missed this when it first came out so I listened to the audio. Wanted to be all caught up for book 3. It didn't disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and the 2 cases Ellery was trying to solve but most of all I loved the interactions between Reed and Ellery and seeing just how damaged Ellery was. I can't wait for the next book to see what comes from the startling discovery Reed made about his father

some of the genetics stuff didn’t make sense to me. like two brothers should have similar genes even if they don’t look identical… but omg the slow burn romance!
they hugged!
