Having accepted that Fourth Wing read like it was written by a 13-year-old fanfiction author, I went into Iron Flame ready to just enjoy the ride. And for the most part, I did—but wow, was it frustrating at times.
Andarna’s sweet, kind personality, which contrasted so well with Tairn’s gruffness in the first book, was completely wiped out by the excuse of "adolescence." And don’t even get me started on the sheer amount of miscommunication between Violet and Xaden—so much of their conflict could have been solved with one honest conversation.
That being said, the ending has me intrigued, and I’m still excited to see where the series goes next. Here’s hoping book three brings some better character development along with the drama.

Honestly, I feel like this one was more for world building and background to love the storylines rather than entertainment. BUT I already love the characters and can’t wait for the next one. This one was just a little slow.

Iron Flame is the second book in The Empyrean series and it was action packed filled with battle scenes and romantic vibes. Violet grows a lot in this second book and is constantly uncovering secrets. Xaden becomes even more protective of Violet but learns that he can’t stop what she feels she needs to do. This book ends on a major cliffhanger that leaves you UNWELL wanting more to see where the story goes.

Goddamn do they like to bicker in this one. The main characters spend the entire book fighting about the same issue and I don’t think it’s resolved by the end despite the characters seemingly changing their attitudes. The structure of the book also doesn’t do it any service. There are far too many time skips for anything to feel momentous. Keeping the timeline of the book to a year just made the story feel emptier than it could’ve otherwise felt. The ending was epic though, I liked the General as a character more than I expected. That said, none of the characters aside from the main two ever felt more rounded compared to the first book which was a shame since the main squad was likable enough. All and all a middle of the road book.
