I have to admit that I wasn't too looking forward to this book - a book group pick. I almost wasn't going to attend this group because it was scheduled on a random night (not our usual) and I usually have plans on that night. Also, I'm not a big non-fiction fan, and for another, I had no clue who Shonda Rhimes was. I've never seen her shows, barely knew her name, completely wasn't interested.
However, that night freed up, I was caught up on my book group reading, and I read the reviews, listened to the sample on Audible and decided to download the audiobook and give it a go. Boy, am I glad I did - I'd give it 10 stars if I could - seriously, I would.
This book spoke to me in a lot of ways. The author spins a good story - she knows how to drag you in and want to know more. She described feelings of being an introvert and being a non-traditional, successful woman in ways that I had felt but didn't know how to put into words. She took me along on her journey of discovering who she was and made me want to join her.
This is not to say the book doesn't have its flaws. I would have like more details on some of her thought processes and less name dropping (mainly because I have no clue who the people are who she's talking about). There's a lot of repetition, but I think that's more her style - to bring the themes together, from beginning of chapter to end of chapter and beginning of book to end of book - a way of tying it all together. This book isn't for everyone. I read one review where she accused the author of humblebragging. There is that; however, quite honestly, she deserves it. This woman works hard and has accomplished a lot.
I think listening to the book, read by the author, added a lot to my enjoyment. She added a lot with her intonations and emphases where she wanted them. (Emphases is the plural of emphasis...I looked it up). They also included the audio of her actual speeches that are mentioned in the book. If you have the opportunity, I would highly recommend listening to it, although I do plan to find the book in print (used) some day.

This book was not what I was expecting. I've put off reading it since it came out. But I finally read it at a timely moment in my life. Love the insight into her creative process as brief as it was. Love the "advice" she gives that is real and practical.

A little bit more than your typical celebrity memoir: the author does a great job of being open about herself, her fears, her perspective, and her experiences while still being funny and relatable. This book is a combination of memoir and self-help, without becoming too preachy or condescending. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Helpful and charming. Loved the audiobook, read by the author.
