I love this story and have thoroughly enjoyed the film adaptations but, I just cannot get past King’s writing style and overall tone.

I’m still planning to try The Shining later this year, so hopefully I will get along with that one better.

I really only listened to this because I'm rather fond of the narrator, but y'know what. Besides the inexplicably jarring fatphobia and some v gross gross gross disturbing scenes (like unnecessary disturbing scenes), I listened to this 45 hour audiobook in a week. And I think I didn't mind it. And oh my god SO much better than The Stand. Sorry to the Stand Stans, but this one was better 🤷

Like watching two seasons of a netflix limited series. Best coming of age novel I've picked up but gave me dreams for the weeks. Unforgettable

(just so happened to unknowingly finish on 6/10/25, 40 yrs after the last scene in the book, 6/10/1985 😏)

Let's be honest. This is a total masterpiece work. The story is brilliant and despite it having massively bloated pointless sections it's compelling and keeps you listening/reading no matter what. I first read the book aged about 15 thirty years ago and I've just completed this re-listen via audible and im just as traumatized as the first time. I would give the full five stars were it not for the extreme racist, homophobic, mysogynistic and fatphobic language used, which I know is outdated and King no longer writes like that but it can't be overlooked and it deserves point deductions for the completely unnecessary and disgusting sex scene between the losers club in the sewer at their first battle with IT alone.

I wanted to read what is widely celebrated as King’s best work. I found out that I mostly disagree. It’s so long and so slow. It’s one of the few books that is served well being adapted for tv or film just because there are so many opportunities to trim the fat. The constant switching of timelines felt unnecessary and exhausting. The random injections of sex were sporadic and weird. The turtle felt like an acid trip. Some parts of the book were truly beautiful and horrifying, but much of it felt like a slog. This book may have parted me from the herd of many King fans who obsess over this book and despise the Holly Gibney books.

I loved 'Salem's Lot. Pet Sematary is maybe my favorite book of all time. This book made me question why I liked either of those. It's bad. Racist, sexist, and pedophilic.
