Waris Dirie has my utmost respect for everything she endured. Seriously. The parts of the book when she was still in Africa were nauseating, especially the part where she had her clitoridectomy, it's very graphic and descriptive (TRIGGER WARNING if anyone decides to read it), made me sick to my stomach. I have never read anything so disturbing. Unfortunately the rest of the book is so badly written. Apparently it was written in collaboration with a journalist and I don't know if that's it that ruined it. When she launched her modelling career it's dragging a lot to the point where I skim-read most of it. Waris Dirie is a tremendously inspiring and courageous woman, a role model to every girl but the book isn't the best. I don't wanna rate it lower because I can't give memoirs very low ratings.

simply incredible and immensely important book. i can't imagine how hard it must have been for Waris Dirie to open up like this and share such intimate details about her life.

I would give this book 5 stars... but I can say with all honesty; this is not a book to be enjoyed.
It is scary, disturbing, confronting, but... nevertheless, it must be read.
It has me up late worrying about the 2 million girls (world-wide) being circumcised every year. Most of them under the age of five. Most of them die, all get infections, and all suffer life-long consequences. And some of them, are in Australia. I can’t explain the affects of this book. It must be read.
