"there would be that queer amalgamation of dream and reality we knew so intimately: it was the alchemy of our own existence. These biographies would bring forth moments of becoming that lasted for centuries; there would be more than one life unfurling in every life. The lines would not break off on the page just when we had fallen in love, and in each chapter Sappho might become a different one of us."
I wanted to love this, but I had a hard time with the format (very short vignettes spanning many characters, locations, and times).
It was especially difficult to read because my copy had a printing error - around the middle of the book, there were 10 pages printed out of order, and then 10 missing pages!

What’s the point of writing a whole book highlighting the lives of overlooked historical lesbians, if you solely focus on wealthy and white ones?
What the absolute heck did I just read? Like the book description doesn’t even equate to the book. The multi POV stories fine. But the whole switching to “we” in the middle of stories super confusing.

This is one of the most beautiful books I've read in a long time. It's poetic and disjointed and fragmentary (for obvious reasons). It deals with a lot of the things I've been struggling with - how do we choose between the work of a better world and a life, how do we survive when that work is futile, how do we work together when we're all so different. It's mostly about love, though, and poetry - how women love each other, how poetry gave a voice to it.
The huge, huge Citation List is going to be a source of many rabbit holes for me, too. I will be rereading this for years to come.

i found this book quite difficult to read at the beginning due to how it’s written and it’s floaty, almost fantastical structure but as i read i became absorbed by these amazing women continuing to live as their true selves during such a turbulent time in history. i do think the writing style would put people off but i like it’s non-conformity and how that links to the non-conforming nature of sapphism.
Very mixed feelings about this book. I thought the insights and the themes were super powerful and something that should pervade more, but I found myself so lost. There was so much going on, what was true and what wasn’t, who was I following at that time.
I think there is a lot of good in here, but I couldn’t follow it.
