Another 4* & I think it was a story follow up (if you liked the first book.) The first half was the same as the first book & it’s could have been cut down by 100 pages or so. I liked how the new characters were introduced but I really hate the bad guys in this book in a way I can’t explain. I just really don’t like who they are or what they’re doing :/

Picks up fast, with higher stakes, harsher trials, and deepening rebellion. Violet faces the consequences of past choices, while Xaden and she navigate the distance and tension between them, creating an immediate yearning for closeness. You feel everything the author wants the characters to feel, which makes their emotions resonate fully. Their love is apparent, though at first they dance around each other—but Violet’s persistence helps Xaden gradually open up, and it’s refreshing to read about a female character who acts logically and thoughtfully.
The story expands the world’s mythology and deepens romantic tensions. Violet’s powers evolve alongside her relationships with her friends and with Xaden, who himself experiences significant growth. Their bond strengthens throughout, showcasing mutual devotion and connection. By the end, the narrative leaves the reader eagerly anticipating what comes next, and Xaden firmly earns his place as a top-tier book boyfriend, alongside Rhysand, Kai, Jacks, Cassian and more.

This was a struggle for me to get through. Gonna call it 3 stars because it was a good story and I think it had a lot components for a solid fantasy, but there were so many things that I just didn’t love personally. Violet and Xaden were annoying as hell this time around. They both came off very childish to me. I think it would have been cooler if they collaborated more on solving problems instead of all this secret keeping nonsense. The book would have been a whole lot shorter too if they just focused on being powerful badasses and not pussyfooting around to try to keep each other safe. Like this is war!! Go do war stuff!!! Ugh I was just bored and wanted more action instead of weird relationship dynamic I guess. Tairn and Andarna were the real stars of the book though!! The ending was gripping and it does make me want to continue the series- I just hope the next book gets to the point a little more quickly lmao
