The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Baby Sleep Longer

This book was like magic for our newborn. The 5 S's really worked wonders with her.
Overall very solid advice on the 4th trimester, which makes perfect sense for a newborn if you really think about it. The book is a little repetitive, but if you are reading it amidst the craziness of having a newborn, it's probably best that they repeat the pertinent information. My advice, read a few months before baby, or even weeks, and practice swaddling, it's the most important S.

Everyone should read this book before they bring their baby home.

Very helpful and I appreciate that it was backed in significant amount of research (studies are listed by chapter at the end). It was LONG tho and often repetitive - perhaps the intent was to provide the information in different ways for people who learn/are convinced differently (e.g. science of why, debunking common misconceptions, parent testimonials). There was a bit more self promotion than I’d like (e.g. referenced his dvd, sleep sounds cd, etc a lot) and a few places where his views on other topics were strongly noted (e.g. “breast is best”), however those were heavily outweighed by the clear explanation of the fourth trimester, the 5s, and why/how these strategies work.
With so much advice out there, I also appreciated the sections that explained why some common tactics don’t typically work or why some common guidance is not valid.
Overall I highly recommend this book and feel much more prepared and calm in anticipation of my first born. If you’re reading all at once tho, feel free to skim the redundant parts :-)

I found this book to be quite helpful! It is repetitive but I feel like I have retained the information better because of the repetition. I’m looking forward to putting the info into practice.

How to take a 5 page article and drag it into a book. I am happy I bought this used at cut rate price. Either check it out from a library or buy used. This whole book can be pared down to the 5S and a few pages, but it is dragged out to make it into a book and justify the cost.
The 5S are more like the 5Rs: repetitive, recycled, redundant, reiterated, and repeated.
Beyond that, the book is subtly sexist, xenophobic, and racist. I guess i can't be surprised as the author drops a surprising number of Old Testament quotes in the book.
